  Therapy Room, Malmesbury

This was an interesting project only a stone’s throw from Malmesbury town centre. Having acquired some land and able to extend the back garden our clients wanted to fulfil their ambition of building their own treatment room. Sue who has been practising the Alexander technique for a number of years felt that this was the perfect opportunity to have a purpose built studio that would complement her style of therapy. Carol, a keen photographer and gardener, also thought a well designed building would also act as a studio and could be used as a complementary garden room.

The cabin, designed around 3 main rooms, was constructed using 160mm laminated logs and was raised on concrete piles to preserve the roots of the large willow tree that is a feature of the garden. Although the cabin is 61 square metres it has been sympathetically designed to sit discretely in the garden so as not to be too imposing for the clients or overlooking neighbours.
This cabin required a lot of material all of which was stacked on the driveway and man handled to the rear of the house where it was erected by hand. Logistically this was a tricky contract but one that was made easier by the understanding and generosity of the clients who kept us supplied with endless coffee and biscuits. They both had clear ideas about the look, finish and detail of the cabin which helped the job run more smoothly.

Skill Centre, Pontypool

This will is the second time that we have worked with the woodlands field group.
After constructing a ‘Community Education Centre’ for the group in 2008, the group has managed to obtain funds from the ‘National Lottery’ and ‘Welsh Government’s CFAP’ to construct two other cabins at the same site.
‘Log Cabin UK’  accepted the role of principle contractor for these two cabins. This was interesting for us as it will be the first time we  constructed two cabins simultaneously.

Penrhyncoch School Nursery, Wales

After several years of having to share the local village hall, a local committee, with the assistance and experience of Log Cabin UK, acquired lottery funding for a purpose built nursery in the grounds of the local school.

The design of the cabin is based around a large central room with plenty of natural light. On one side of the building is an office for staff on the opposite toilet facilities and a kitchen. A mezzanine floor above these rooms creates plenty of storage space.

Porthkerry County Park, Barry

This cabin was built for the Vale of Glamorgan County Council as a classroom/conference facility in the middle of Porthkerry Country Park on the outskirts of Barry.
This cabin is comprised of one open room of 64 square metres with a wood burning stove as it’s only source of heating. The walls are 300mm thick and are made up of a 160mm outer log with a 100mm insulated stud partition and lined with a 40mm thick log clad that matches the profile of the outer log.

It has proved to be a valuable asset to the park and its rangers allowing them to use it as an educational base from which they can explore the park and raise its profile by increasing awareness and understanding.
The lodge has been made available to wider range of groups in the community as well as being used as a conference facility by organisations seeking a more natural and tactile environment to meet in.
This project took 5 weeks from delivery to practical completion.

Community Education Centre, Woodlands Field, Torfaen

This was a lottery funded project to design and build a community building facility for the residents of Penygarn near Pontypool.

The building is a total of 270 square metres with the main hall being a little over 140m2. There is an IT room, a kitchen, an office, a ladies, gents and disabled toilet, two store rooms and a large foyer. Large windows at the front of the building allow natural light to pass through to the hall and foyer, reducing the need for constant lighting.

As well as the building being constructed from sustainable and renewable logs, other environmental concepts are being applied to improve the sustainability of the finished building. A ground source heat pump in the neighbouring playing field will provide enough natural heat for the underfloor heating and supplement the hot water for the building. Rainwater harvesting is to be used for flushing the toilets and urinals.

Horticultural Centre, Cowbridge

This was a lottery funded project to build a horticultural centre for a charity called Drive. We were first approached in January 2004 by Pentan Partnership Architects in Cardiff to bid for and help with design aspects of building a log structure that can be used as a teaching, conference and office facility.

The centre is approximately 115 square metres in size and constructed using 202mm laminated square sawn log.
Its layout comprises of two teaching/conference rooms, a kitchen, two offices, three Wcs, a boiler room and a wood store. This cabin was designed and constructed so that the rafters are exposed on the inside which shows off the detailed roof construction very well. Because the kitchen has no external windows we installed a sunpipe to allow natural light into the room – it is very effective!

Education Centre, Windermere

When I had a phone call from Lancashire County Council asking if I would be interested in building a log cabin in the Lake District I had trouble containing my excitement, after a brief pause I calmly and casually asked what it entailed.

This is was our first lottery funded project. The project was to construct a log building that would replace porta cabins on an existing site on the edge of Windermere. The design is a little out of the ordinary as it was to be positioned on a difficult site wedged in between an access road and a stream, nestled in amongst trees. The overall size of the building is approximately 170 square metres and is constructed using 202mm laminated square sawn logs, In total we had three and a half lorry loads delivered from Finland.
Right from the outset this project has been excellent. From the design team at Lancashire Property and Works to the staff at Tower Wood who were very helpful and hospitable – keeping us fed with cake and coffee to get us through the some of the wettest and coldest weather we have experienced on a project.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to the official opening ceremony of the centre, the first time we have had any kind of recognised opening of one of our buildings. It was well attended and was good to see people having an enjoyable time and using our cabin.

Caynham Mill holiday cabin, Ludlow

For this project we sourced some marvellous 50+ year old Douglas fir from a well-managed forest in mid Wales, the peeling, carving and construction was carried out in our yard where it was then labelled, dismantled and shipped over to Ludlow for re-assembly.

This is an all access building with two bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/diner/living room and toilet all on one level. A lot of consideration has been given to the use of outside living space and there are extended covered areas incorporated into the design.

Aberdovey Bunkhouse, Wales

This cabin, commissioned by The Outward Bound Trust, was constructed using western red cedar sourced from a sustainable forest in Brecon. The logs were hand peeled then scribed, carved and erected on our yard before being labelled, dismantled and transported to site.
